With an abundance of native bush, you will hopefully encounter several of the local residents including the Bell Bird (korimako), Fantail (piwakawaka), Tom Tit (ngirungiru) and possibly the Parakeet (kakariki)! The course features a combination of single track, 4WD tracks and farmland. On a clear day, you will also be treated to views of Mt Skedaddle (1704m), the highest point on the property. ![]() There are many highlights along the way including the historic Bush Hut and the stunning native bush within the Mandamus Preservation Reserve. Starting next to the historic Island Hills woolshed, the course follows a 4WD farm track for the first three kilometres before crossing the Glencoe River and joining singletrack that weaves its way through the station. ![]() With over 1,800m of elevation gain, this race will still test your endurance on the many climbs and descents along the way but you will be rewarded with some stunning scenery and the sound of native birdsong as you journey your way through Island Hills Station. If you have a few road or trail half marathons under your belt then this is the course for you! The 30km ‘Wilderbeast’ is a great middle distance option for anyone who might not be ready to step up to the full marathon distance. The beauty of this course is that it has a generous cut-off time so take your time and soak in the scenery! The descent takes you through native bush eventually siddling the Glencoe river before a wee climb and descent through farmland to the finish line. The course climbs to the highest altitude of all four courses, reaching 850m above sea level. From here there is a steep climb up the ‘Dozer Line’ track, a creation of the infamous bulldozer driver, Tommy Baker. Starting next to the historic Island Hills woolshed, the course sidles the Dove River before joining singletrack that weaves its way through to a grass saddle. This scenic loop provides some incredible views but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s an easy course! There is a wee climb or two but with a generous cut-off time, you can cruise at your own pace. The 15km ‘Dozer Line’ course provides a great option for anyone new to trail running or perhaps as a training run in preparation for another upcoming race. With 124m of elevation gain across this 3km course, it’s still an honest challenge for the little ones.Īs they say, what goes up, must come down! The return to the finish line includes some downhill sections and once again follows a series of 4WD farm tracks. ![]() Starting next to the historic Island Hills woolshed, the course follows a gravel road for approximately 1km before joining a 4WD farm track that weaves its way up to a high point (487m) with views across the entire station. The 3km ‘Weaning Muster’ is a great option for the little ones to experience a slice of Island Hills Station. The courses are all point-to-point along stunning singletrack through the privately-owned Island Hills Station.Īptly named after the highest point on the property, Mt Skedaddle (1704m), it’s time to take flight for nature! The race consists of four distances 42km, 30km, 15km and a kids 3km.
